Beyond the early history of Shelf: talk by Ben Stables

Far from being ‘left on the shelf’, the village of Shelf, between Bradford and Halifax, is full of history. It developed from moorland and forest into a landscape full of activity.

 Find out about William, the 14th century “Clerk of Shelf”; the 16th century windmill; William Cowper who lost his families estate and was starving as a prisoner at York in the 1630s; a nasty dispute over a pew at Coley Church in 1685, and much more…. 

Ben Stables is a local historian and walk leader for Calderdale Heritage Walks. He has explored the environment and people of the area of Shelf, and has gained an appreciative following as a speaker.
