Hebden Bridge, once known as ‘Trouser Town’ thanks to its textile heritage boasts many historic landmarks. Why not visit during Heritage Open Days and see what our historic sites have to offer? At the Birchcliffe Centre, Pennine Heritage hold local archives on the history of the South Pennines, complemented by the work and talks by Hebden Bridge Local History Society. History buffs will appreciate Heptonstall Museum, which showcases the story of the 18th-century Cragg Vale Coiners. Near the museum is St. Thomas the Apostle Church graveyard, the resting place of literary great Sylvia Plath.
A key attraction is Gibson Mill at Hardcastle Crags (National Trust) which attracts thousands of visitors each year, while Walkley’s Clogs and the Mytholmroyd Station Partnership help preserve and celebrate local traditions. The Calderdale Way offers a 50-mile route following ancient packhorse trails through hillside villages and local cartographer Chris Goddard's maps highlight the area's folklore and rich natural history - as explored by various walking groups, and bushcraft / foraging courses.
