‘English avant-folk at its finest’ The Observer
We welcome back to Wainsgate the wonderful, breathtaking enigmatic You Are Wolf whose virtuoso solo performance here in 2018 was the outstanding concert of that year. You Are Wolf is the alt-folk project of award-winning British composer, vocalist, author and recent inhabitant of Hebden bridge, Kerry Andrew.
Currently a trio, You Are Wolf present folk songs and lore with unusual, electronica-tinged arrangements influenced by drone, experimental classical and alt-pop. Kerry writes, arranges, is a multi-instrumentalist on, and co-produces their work.
You Are Wolf has performed on BBC Radio 3 and 4. They have supported Billy Bragg at the Manchester O2, and played at The Great Escape, Leigh Folk Festival, Union Chapel, Cambridge Folk Festival and the Queen Elizabeth Hall. They were an initial member of The Lost Words; Spell Songs folk supergroup in 2019, alongside Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis and others, until chronic illness took hold. They feature on the first album Spell Songs (Hudson Records) and recently arranged ten songs by the group's two albums for choirs, as The Lost Words: A Choral Songbook. In 2024, they arranged and performed the choral vocals for Hayden Thorpe and Robert Macfarlane's album NESS (Domino Records).
Kerry Andrew is a composer who has won four British Composer Awards, has a PhD in Composition and has written for the BBC Proms, National Theatre, Art on the Underground and London Sinfonietta. They were Chair of the Judges for BBC Young Musician 2018 and has regularly appeared on BBC Radio 3 as a presenter and guest.
Anna Snow is a singer, music therapist, music educator and community musician who enjoys a busy career moving between these roles. Anna enjoys the rich variety within her work. Recent and upcoming performances range from her touring with early music group, The York Waits. Anna has toured nationally and internationally, together with Kerry Andrew, as a founding member of juice vocal ensemble – an experimental, a cappella trio who explore and challenge the human voice.
Ed Snow is a multi-instrumentalist and musician based in York. As a singer he performs with York Minster Choir, The Ebor Singers, and Yorkshire Bach Choir; as a double bass player he recently worked with the Afro-Cuban ensemble Charanga del Norte; as the drummer in 7 Seconds of Love has skanked up venues across the country including the Boomtown festival; and as a composer he has soundtracked a number of short films, including Sky Atlantic's "Uncle Wormsley's Christmas" which won Best Original Score at the Sapporo International Short Film Festival
