The Staffordshire Hoard: another side of archaeology : talk by Stephen Dean

Back in 2009, a metal detectorist working on fields to the south of the A5 in Staffordshire came across what became the largest hoard of early medieval gold and silver found, to date, in North Western Europe. Since then, archaeologists, conservators and historians have been pouring over the Staffordshire Hoard. Why was it here? How was it all brought together in the first place? 

As the County Archaeologist, Stephen worked closely with all concerned and will be talking about the circumstances of the discovery, focusing on some of the best known pieces. What can it tell us about political and religious tensions in the 7th century and why did it come to be buried close to a Roman road deep in the heart of Mercia? 

Stephen Dean has an academic and professional background in archaeology, having worked for Staffordshire County Council as an archaeologist for 13 years, involved in numerous projects including the discovery of the Staffordshire Hoard. 

He talked to the Society last year about his work as a senior archaeologist with the Environment Agency, planning for digs in Hebden Bridge. As promised, he returns this year to tell us about finds that are a bit more glamorous.
