Paul Colley CB OBE FRPS
Photographer and Conservationist
Paul is a freelance wildlife photographer striving to make images count in the conservation of wildlife and habitats in rivers, lakes, forests and oceans. He works with marine, freshwater and wildlife conservation agencies worldwide, most notably Fauna and Flora International, the Blue Marine Foundation and the Bat Conservation Trust.
A former chairman of the British Society of Underwater Photographers, Paul pioneered new river-wildlife photography techniques using remote control cameras. He expanded his portfolio to include above-water subjects and recently established his position as one of the world’s leading night-infrared bat photographers.
A former overall winner of both the British Wildlife Photography Awards and the British & Irish Underwater Photography Championship, Paul has also recorded major successes in Underwater Photographer of the Year, Bird Photographer of the Year and Nature Photographer of the Year. He has won Royal Photographic Society gold medals and his work is published widely in UK broadsheets and international magazines. His book Winning Images secured him a Royal Photographic Society associateship for its contribution to the research, education and application of photography. The Society also awarded Paul a fellowship for his ground-breaking study into new techniques for bat photography.
Paul’s latest work is a study of deep space astrophotography. He recently designed and built an overseas observatory which he controls remotely to take extreme-length exposures of deep space objects. It continues his drive to produce artistic renditions of the natural world through a disciplined technical approach that he learned as a former top gun instructor. He is currently undertaking his second fellowship with the Royal Photographic Society, this time in astrophotography.
