Before The Making Mill became the home of creativity, workshops and events, this building had a much spookier past.
In 1990, the Hebden Crypt opened. The brian child of Bill Gricks, he turned this former old Co-op building into one of Yorkshire's most unusual horror attractions. The house of horror featuring 22 gruesome scenes, inspired by characters and stories including Vlad the Impaler, Jack the Ripper, Sweeney Todd and Elizabeth Bathory, and back then, the place caused quite a stir locally. Whether seen as in bad taste, or an afront to the reglious community, many weren't convinced it belonged in Hebden Bridge. But that didn't stop people coming — tens of thousands visited in its first year.
The Crypt eventually closed in 1996, but the stories of have never really disappeared.
And now it's coming back.
For Halloween 2026, The Making Mill is reviving the Hebden Crypt in the very same building where it all began.
Be prepared for the strange, macabre and wonderfully theatrical horror that once had Hebden talking.
If you remember the Crypt, come back.
If you don't, come and experience fright night what all the fuss was about.
