Join Friends of Colden Clough as we help protect our woods by undertaking woodland management to increase biodiversity.
In June we will be pulling Himalayan balsam which is an invasive species which outcompetes our native flowers. As we are lucky enough to have rare ancient woodland in Colden Clough, working to eradicate balsam is important to enable special plants like bluebells, wood anemones and water avens to thrive. Not only this, but the shallow root system of balsam has a negative effect on the integrity of the soil whilst intact native plants can help to slow the flow of water - in a valley where every centimetre of water can buy time for local homes and businesses in flood events, tackling balsam can be a very rewarding task.
In the following months we will be undertaking other important woodland management jobs like removing invasive tree and shrub species, tree planting and hedge laying.
We will meet at Eaves Playground on Eaves Avenue in Hebden Bridge (HX7 6DJ) and then head up to a suitable spot. Parking is very limited so please walk, cycle or bus it (unfortunately there is no bus to Eaves on a Sunday but you could get one to the bottom of Church Lane and walk up or get one to Heptonstall and walk down through the woods)
Wear long sleeved clothing and trousers to protect yourself and bring a sun hat and water if the weather is warm.
All children must be accompanied by an adult. Well behaved, friendly dogs are also welcome. See less
Wear sturdy boots and bring a waterproof jacket just in case
