Worker-Owned Success: The Story of Nutclough Mill

Discover the remarkable story of Hebden Bridge's worker-run Nutclough Mill, founded in the 1870s by textile workers seeking control over their own employment. Growing to employ more than 300 people and turning a profit every year, the co-operative gained national and international recognition. Led by Joseph Greenwood, it helped shape the co-operative movement and inspired the UK's first Women's Co-operative Guild branch.

Andrew Bibby explores the challenges, achievements and enduring lessons of this pioneering business model, offering insights that remain relevant today. Andrew Bibby is a writer and journalist, with a particular interest in the co-operative business model and co-operative history. His journalism has appeared in the British national press and he has undertaken work for, among others, the International Co-operative Alliance, the International Labour Organization COOP, and Co-operatives UK. He is the author of several books, including the history of early co-operative and community-led housing, These Houses Are Ours (Gritstone Publishing, distributed Cordee).
