An Introduction to Creative Practice through the work of Michael Chekhov

Event added by Mo Brown

Michael Chekhov was a celebrated actor in Russia & the USSR. He was forced to leave his homeland because his ‘mystical tendencies’ were anathema to Soviet Socialist Realism.

He was an Anthroposophist and incorporated some of Steiner’s work into his practice. Chekhov focused on imagination rather than memory and on the differences between actor and character rather than the similarities. Not ‘what would I do in this situation’ but ‘what would the character do’.

At the heart of Chekhov’s work is the idea of transformation both in art and in everyday life.

In this short introductory session we will look at some of the basic exercises to wake up our body and imagination, cross the threshold, work with atmospheres, get a taste of imaginary bodies and introduce the idea of the Psychological Gesture. We will also do some simple improvisations.

No experience of drama is necessary, just a willingness to experiment and contribute  to a non-judgemental atmosphere

Dress to allow for freedom of movement

The session will be facilitated by Franc Chamberlain, former theatre professor and Chekhov scholar.
